About the work -「常滑フィールド・トリップ2009」 土管坂休憩所(愛知県常滑市栄町)/ “Tokoname Field Trip 2009” Dokan-zaka Rest House, Tokoname city, Aichi prefecture
This work was part of the "Tokoname Field Trip 2009" art project, set in the cityscape of Tokoname City, Aichi Prefecture, where old pottery workshops and traditional homes stand side by side.
For this project, I interviewed a resident living along the "Pottery Footpath," a popular tourist area. He was born and raised in Tokoname and is now retired, spending his time enjoying gardening. His garden, which resembles a wildflower meadow, catches the eyes of wandering tourists, bringing them delight. He, in turn, enjoys the interactions with these visitors.
Gardens created from personal sentiments and the character of their owners contribute to shaping the landscape and memories of the town. This work focuses on the relationship between the garden owner and the garden itself.
Production process
I visited the garden approximately once a week to conduct interviews, which included:
Having casual conversations on the veranda with the garden owner, during which we discussed the garden, life in Tokoname, and other topics.
Receiving cut grass placed in a corner of the garden.
Additionally, about once a month, I filmed the state of the garden and the garden owner standing in it.
The interview period spanned approximately four months, from May to October 2009.
The work was exhibited at the "Dokan-zaka Rest House," an old private residence located very close to the garden. In one room, I displayed fragments of our conversations along with dried grass, covering an entire wall. In the adjacent room, I screened the video. Additionally, I distributed cosmos seeds harvested from the garden to visitors.
